Probably the only time he is quiet, apart from his naptime 😁 #desserttime

Because he wanted to help Mamma make chappathi 🙈😀

Agu boy comes to the kitchen 2 minutes after I handed over his dinner, which was mini dosas with chutney today.

Agu (very politely): Mama, can you please put this in the waste basket?
Me: What?
Agu: Dosa
Me: Why???!!
Agu: I want only chicken and rice
Me: 😐😐

I think I can see that transition from terrible twos to troublesome threes already 😁

So hopefully I'm getting a break from his official "punching bag" role as we got him an actual punching buddy 😁

DATES & CHOCOLATE POPSICLES

We all know that dates are really healthy for kids because it is rich in iron. I had this tub of fresh cream in the freezer which I save from boiled milk everyday, so I made these slightly-healthy dates popsicles for Agu. Do try these super easy recipe for your tiny ice cream love!

What you need:

Condensed milk: 1 cup
Milk cream: 1 cup
Dates: half cup
Cocoa powder: 2tbsp

Method:

Blend milk cream and dates in your mixer until the cream gets all whisked up
Combine condensed milk with cocoa powder in a bowl
Add the whipped cream mix with the cocoa mixture
Freeze them in popsicle moulds or in a tub for creamy yummy home made ice cream!

So now I realise the best way to get your own peaceful me-time is to get a toy that equally fascinates Agu boy and Papa darling 😂😂

For the love of books

I don't clearly remember when we started reading stories to Agu, may be from the time he was 5-6 months old. Now that he is nearly 3 years old, his love for books has only gone up. He gets equally excited being at a book store or a toy shop and he loves to choose his books (he is always given the freedom to select things he love 😃).

From the time I remember of my childhood, we had a library membership and we used to look forward to holidays so we could go exchange our books and get new ones, the smell of a new book still brings me so much joy..and yes I ended up taking up Engineering and Clinical Research! (Damn! Okay let's not vent about it here 😁).

After becoming a mother I was so busy reading parenting articles and baby recipes, I really lost touch with my books. So last year I decided I have to squeeze in some time for reading and finally found the slot during Agu's afternoon naptime. So there are days when I wait for him to fall asleep so I can spend that precious me-time with a book 🙈

One thing I felt is that reading out to them or narrating stories help a lot to develop their imagination. Sometimes he amazes us by relating real life things to his favorite stories, like if he sees an octopus he remembers "Susie and the Mermaid", when he sees a gorilla he remembers "Grandma elephant's birthday".

So here we are, with a new set of books to get us going!

Friday, 8 September 2017

So all of a sudden this guy runs to me, hands over this almost finished corn and with overflowing love says "Mama!! Special for you! Eat it".
Yes, the almost empty corn and here I'm sitting and wondering if I should just dump it in the dust bin or eat it for his sake.
One of those major confusions only these little fellows can put us into 😁

Evening scene:

Me: Agu, what do you want to do for your third birthday?? (Which is 2 months away)
Agu: mmmmm
Me: Do you want to go for a beach vacation?
Agu: No
Me: Do you want to spend time with your friends?
Agu: No
Me: Then what do you want to do?
Agu: Agu wants Milk and Chocos

This little guy has very simple preferences in life  (at times 😁)

Friday, 1 September 2017

He has become a pro at cycling now and has found out that it's the easiest way to travel around the house 😁

Well..yes, he's wearing my top over his t-shirt. One of those days when he's sick and we are forced to give in to his silly demands 🙈

Monday, 14 August 2017

Everywhere we see people spreading awareness about the horrific blue whale suicide incidents. Let this be just a reminder for all of us to spend more time with our kids and to have an open environment at home, where they should have the freedom to vent out all their happiness and worries.

Let's all take pride in how our 2 year old can mess with a bunch of mega blocks or Lego  rather than taking pride in them being a tech savvy or a gadget friendly kid at that age.

Let's sing out loud or clumsily dance with them rather than keeping them chained with an iPad.

Let's read out to them or tell them a story rather than shutting out their imagination with an electronic gadget.

Moreover, let's encourage them for being whatever they are, tell every kid that they are unique in their own way and please stop comparing them with another kid. Remember every kid is different and the best we parents can do is to let them be who they are!

Friday, 21 July 2017

I remember we were very keen on teaching Agu the concept of sharing. This  little guy took it to the next level and started giving away his favorite toys to random kids at the park and we had their parents chasing us and giving them back 🙈 The only thing he was a bit hesitant about sharing was his favorite something to eat (yes, he got the love for food from both of us 😁).
So today was Parents day celebration along with the snack sharing day at Agu's school. So all the kids bring an extra share of snack and share it with the class. Isn't that a wonderful thing to teach kids at a young age? I really wouldn't worry about which number, letter or body part he learned from school as long as he gets to learn such lessons which he would carry all along his life.

This is what I made today, "dark chocolate mini sandwich bites" (okay so that sounds pretty fancy  😎)

Ragi-Wheat Egg Roll

Here's an easy evening snack/ snack box Recipe for you all to give a try.

Things you need:

Wheat flour: 1cup
Ragi flour: 1/3 cup
Egg: 1
Onions: half an onion
Cheese: 2 tbsp

How to make:

Make the dough for chappathi by combining wheat and ragi flour along with water.
Heat a pan, add a little ghee and toss the chappathi till both sides are almost done. Keep it aside.
Break an egg on to the pan, sprinkle salt and pepper, place the chappathi on it and press gently.
Allow it to cook for about 30 seconds (we don't want the egg to be runny).
Place it on a plate with the egg side on top, spread cheese and some sliced onions.
Wrap with a silver foil to make it look flashy 😁 it also helps them to keep the roll intact while eating!

Happy snacking!!

Terrible Twos- Not a Myth!

I never believed in the term "terrible twos". I always thought people were just exaggerating until we started going through it when our son turned two! He is usually a happy kid but he turns into a baby monster during his rare  emotional outbursts  😁 We tried a lot of things to deal with it but somehow it was so hard to calm down a 3 footer, who is determined to let out his frustration. Once the tantrum starts, it used to get so intense that there was no way we could distract him or calm him down. We had to let him take his time to calm down on his own and finished it off with hugs and assurance. As days passed by we started getting exhausted, we started giving in to his demands sometimes and it only made things worse.

Somehow we knew we have to find a way to deal with him, not the easy way out but an actual way to help him take charge of his emotions as well. So here are a few tips that worked for us and I hope this might help a few moms out there who have started questioning their sanity!

Patience, Patience and more Patience:

This is one thing we realised over the course of 2.8 years. It is easier said than done because there are times they get to your nerves and chew your brain and it is almost impossible not to shout. They get a huge percentage of traits from the way parents behave so we have no other way but to learn to be calm. When we shout at them, eventually we are showing them that it's okay to shout when you are angry. So as I always say try hard to remain calm and if there's no other go, just walk out of the room. It takes only a few seconds for us to come to our senses and we will be happy we got over a scene without yelling 😁

Listen:

Most of the time, all they want from us is the patience to sit and listen to them. Though they are unable to communicate all their needs, who other than parents can decode their language? ☺ So give them those few minutes when they need our attention.

Replace NO with positive terms:

Instead of stressing on a hundred things they shouldn't be doing, try to keep our conversation positive. For instance he asks for ice cream the moment we reach a restaurant, rather than stressing on "you are not going to have ice cream now" may be rephrase it to "let's have dinner first and then we will order your favorite chocolate ice cream!!". This in a way won't make him feel denied of something and we are actually making them understand we eat dessert after a meal.

Talk to them:

For example our super active son always thinks way ahead of our actions so it made things easier for him when we kept him updated on where we are going or what we will do after a particular activity and so on. May be it helped them picture sequence in their mind which reduced their anxiety about what's coming next.

Teach them to ask for things with a happy face:

We have told him at various occasions that he does not get things done by crying but by asking for it with a happy face. Sometimes when he comes and asks for something with a cranky voice we ask him "how do we ask for things?" and in a second he changes his tone, fixes a smile on his face and repeats his need with a happy face. This might sound funny but trust me eventually they need to learn shouting or crying for things isn't getting them anywhere.

So before you start please stack up all your patience and remember parenting is always a two way act where the kids and parents are equally responsible for the outcome. Don't forget the fact that they are humans too 😄

Hash Browns!

Agu wakes up after his afternoon nap:

Me: Mamma was making hash browns.
Agu (confused, as he doesn't know what hash brown is): Brownies?
Me: No HASH BROWNS
Agu: Hash?
Me: HASH BRRROOOWNSS!
Agu: Agu wants it, Agu wants it.
Me: What do you want?
Agu: Gash growns 😂😂

Remember the "confidence" I was talking about in the previous post 😁

Miracles!

Do you believe in miracles? I hardly believed in them until this naughty bundle came into our lives. I have always felt that with kids around there is constant learning happening in the family. We learn from their innocence and confidence and they get their basic etiquettes from us, parents.
Both of us, husband and I, have actually found our inner selves after becoming parents. We learned to trust our intuition more than any opinion, started taking bold decisions without thinking what the society would think, started chasing our passion along with our daily chores. We always encourage him to take his own decisions, never force him to do things or please people he wasn't comfortable with, at the same time we always make sure he imbibes the good qualities we have. All this sounds too early for a 2.7 year old, but I strongly believe that's when the foundation of their character is actually forming.

There are times we get totally exhausted bringing up this strong-willed-wild-soul, who would turn into a hurricane when he has an emotional outburst, but we are sure at the end he is growing up into a good human with confidence, compassion, love and a bit of mischief (pretty obvious from his smile). 😁

Dear Auto Guy trying to show off your honking skills,

You have no idea about the emotional turmoil the lady driving infront of you is going through. She might as well stop the car, pounce on you and rip you apart!

Yours truly,
The Mom who is driving back home leaving her crying 2 year old at the play group.

Friday, 16 June 2017

At the supermarket, near the ice cream freezer:

Agu to himself: "Which flavour ice cream do you want?"
Also Agu to himself: "Chocolate Truffle"

Opens the freezer, picks up an ice cream grinning at me 😮

This guy is definitely going places 😁

Snack Box Recipe: Spinach and Chicken Nuggets

I'm behind snack box recipes these days as Agu has started play group now. I normally send a snack and a fruit so when I came a cross a chicken nugget recipe I decided to try making it at home rather than buying the packaged one. As I put on the "health conscious Mamma hat" I decided to customize the recipe by adding spinach puree to it 😁 So here's the recipe for nuggets, please try and let me know if this helped to push down some spinach down your munchkin's throat 😁

What you need:
Chicken breast: 2
Garlic cloves: 4-6 (based on your kid's tast bud)
Spinach: one big bunch
Egg: 2
Soya sauce: 1tbsp
Corn flour: 1 cup
Bread crumbs: 1 cup (I powdered rusk and wheat bread together)
Salt: to taste

Method:

Boil water in a pan and add the cleaned spinach leaves in it, let it cook for 2-3 minutes.
In a blender, add diced chicken breast, spinach, garlic, soy sauce and salt. Blend to a paste.
Whisk the eggs, add salt and pepper and keep aside.
Take the bread crumbs and corn flour in 2 separate plates.
Take a small ball of chicken-spinach paste, shape it as you like.
Coat it with corn flour, dip in egg and coat well with bread crumbs.
Shallow fry/ deep fry them or you can store them as such in the freezer.

Yummy chicken nuggets ready!

Notes: You can also add cheese, oregano or chilli flakes to the chicken mix as per your taste 😄

June 5-First Day in Play group: Morning Scenes:

Sooraj and I tried hard to make Agu feel really excited about going to school. Though we have been to mother-toddler groups this was the first time he was going to be on his own with new faces around. I was so nervous about this day past 2 weeks, with a lot of "what if" questions going on my mind that I was almost drained of emotions by yesterday night. So today once he woke up we were acting so happy that even Agu started feeling we were really going on a vacation or something 😁

At the school:
He jumps out of the car..happily wears his school bag and hops to the school entrance. At the gate the teacher takes his hand and he walks away without a fuss. Sooraj turns around with a sigh of relief and there I was, tears flowing down my cheeks 🙈

I don't want to talk about the days after that as there was crying and more crying. Third day was the toughest because of two reasons:

1. He realised I'm not going to be around.

2. That it isn't just a play date that happens once in a while, but a daily routine.

5 days down and I go to pick him up with butterflies fluttering in my stomach and I find him happily jumping and playing around, what a relief! 😄😄

Isn't this what motherhood is all about!  😆

Thursday, 1 June 2017

When you try hard to get him look at the camera for a moment but all he cares about is the ice cream shop on the other side 😑😑

The best possible pose he could think of, while waiting for dessert after dinner 😮😮
Well..Mammahood is truly a balancing act  😁

When you regret the choice you made in life (Agu's expression says it all) 😂😂

Monday, 29 May 2017

Now Agu is a little hesitant to open the fridge every now and then as he is not very happy about the new fridge magnet ("angry uncle" he named him).
So this magnet is doing the job better than the toddler fridge lock we got a while back 😁

Tuesday, 9 May 2017

What if a guy's matrimony picture looked like this? Yes yes a guy showing off his cooking skills rather than the usual "looking for a 'fair-skinned, god-fearing, tall, slim' girl" nonsense!

Wednesday, 3 May 2017

This is how a push up or a plank ends up these days..17kg on my spine 😐😐

Tuesday, 2 May 2017

Got him play doh from the toy store. I was all excited to try my hands on making flowers and butterflies with the moulds and show off my skills.
We get back home, change my dress and I see this lying on the ground. A mass of play doh, and I have no clue what colours they were 5 minutes back 😒😒

Sunday, 30 April 2017

This picture brings mixed emotions in me:

1. Meh: Apart from being a football fanatic's wife, I am going to be a football fanatic's mom as well 😐

2. Happy: After a while I can send both dad and son for football match and enjoy my me time 😁

Friday, 28 April 2017

At the Metro train station:

Lady at the counter: Ma'am, you might have to take a ticket for your son as well.
Me : Looks at him head to toe and pays for his ticket as well.

Sometimes it is so difficult to agree to the fact that they are growing up so fast. This boy was 51 cms when he was born, still sleeps on my tummy like a baby, runs to me for a hug when he's upset because of which I have forgotten that he has grown to a good 99 cms now.

No no I'm not getting emotional now...damn!

Wednesday, 26 April 2017

So I opened the microwave and found these.

When asked he said he was baking "vanilla cupcakes" 🍰 😁

Friday, 21 April 2017

Visit to the toy store

Agu runs ahead and grabs the 2 BIG toys which he sees first at the store
Acts like he cannot live without them and all your efforts to distract him and put them back fail
You buy them just because you are not really in a mood for an emotional outburst
Walk out of the toystore with two toys which you are sure he wouldn't even care about, the moment you step back in the house.

Toddler Recipe: Egg-Cheese-Spinach Sandwich

Agu's new obsession is sandwich, that too cheese sandwich. So my main hobby these days is to try different combinations along with cheese and get some veggies down his throat. This sandwich has always worked with him so here's a quick and easy sandwich recipe for you all to try ☺

What you need:

Wheat bread: 2 slices
Spinach leaves: 15 leaves chopped
Egg: one
Milk: 1tbsp
Salt: a pinch (remember cheese is salty so we can even skip salt here)
Cheese spread: as required

How to make:

Saute spinach leaves in a bit of butter until it's cooked
In a microwave friendly bowl add one egg, milk, spinach leaves, salt.
Microwave for 30 seconds then wait for 10 seconds and again for 30 seconds (Egg would be cooked and hard by then).
Spread cheese over bread, place the spinach loaded egg on it and toast it or pop it in a sandwich maker

Tadaa!! Healthy evening snack in 10 minutes 😁

Friday, 7 April 2017

This is what I saw when i stepped out of my "2-minute-me-time" in the loo 😒😒

Thursday, 6 April 2017

Morning Scene:

Husband: I think we should get a toy car with remote control.
Me (looks at Agu who was playing with spoon and plastic container): hmmm 😮

Husband (with the same twinkle in his eye that he has when he wants to buy new PlayStation CDs): We should get a big one, a really good one.
Me: Agu hardly plays with toys and don't you remember he broke his small remote control car the next day he got it??

Husband: It's not for Agu, it's for me 😁
Me: *sigh* 😨😨

That feeling when you doubt who actually your kid is??!! ☺☺

Friday, 31 March 2017

When we ask him to sleep on his bed:

3/4th of him on our bed, as he wants to snuggle on me
His feet on his bed just so that it doesn't look like he disobeyed what we asked him to do!

Saturday, 25 March 2017

Husband has always had this obsession for white shirts. He has around five of them, which I realise only when I soak all of them together in vanish and I can hardly make out the difference between them. Agu has also had a white shirt at every stage of his size change and everytime he wears white he makes sure he spills something on it 😁

The only thing on my mind right now is how to get those strawberry ice cream stain off that shirt?! 😐

Friday, 24 March 2017

Yesterday 10 pm, Agu runs to me:

Agu: Mama dance with jijisha dance with jijisha (by which he means "dance with Bipasha")
Dances till the end of 45 minutes.

Today 9 am, after we are back from the park Agu runs to Husband
Agu: Papaaa dance with jijisha!!

I wish I was half this motivated about my workout 😁😁

Monday, 20 March 2017

Because he wanted to lend a helping hand to Papa while carrying a huge watermelon. One tiny hand placed over the melon definitely helped 😂😂

When we get out of the car, Agu acts like he cannot survive without Tai Lung (his stuffed toy snow leopard) and wants to take it with him no matter what!
On the way back to the car he acts like he's tired and can't  a walk a step so I end up carrying him AND Tai Lung AND my bag, which apparently contains only his stuff 😒😒

We walked into a toy store to get him a new water bottle. Amidst super hero figurines and hotwheels cars, this is what he chose ☺☺

Breakfast time:

Me: Agu do you want mini mini dosa or cheese sandwich??
Agu (without a doubt): Cheese sandwich
15 minutes later I come and sit beside him to have my dosa.

Agu (who had finished his cheese sandwich by then): mini mini dosaaaa mini mini dosaaaa!! 😒
Me: how many do you want?
Agu: *silence*
Me: one?
Agu: NO
Me: ten?
Agu: NO
Me: Then how many?
Agu: So many many minis 😂😂

This was exactly an hour after I brought him to the bed for his afternoon nap 😁😁

Husband and Surprise planning never goes hand in hand 😂

I met this guy (who is my husband now) during a phase of life where a guy waiting for you with a bouquet of red roses and a huge teddy bear on Valentine's day gave me goosebumps. Turned out this guy whom I decided to marry, hardly remembered his own birthday 😀. We were the kind of couple who walked out with a route map to explore places and local restaurants on our honeymoon.

Disaster 1: My First birthday after we met:
Note: Husband still needs his reminder on phone to remember June 9.
Surprisingly I felt that there was some planning happening behind my back as Husband couldn't hide his mischievous smile as my birthday was getting close. I was asked to dress up without a clue where we are heading to and I was pretty impressed by the way surprise was going on. Half way through I listen to husband calling the destination just to confirm we are on our way only to know that they were closed down that particular day due to some local protest 😮😮  The plan was a one day wine tour at Nandhi Hills which ended up in a big disaster.

After this, due to obvious reasons, I took over the charge of making restaurant reservations and planning vacation.

Disaster 2: Second birthday after we met
I overhear all the hush hush phone calls he has been receiving since morning and get ready to act surprised. At 12 midnight someone rings the doorbell, two of husband's friends emerge with a "surprise cake" which was white Forrest and "Happy Birthday Saranya" written on it.
1. I dislike any cake other than chocolate.
2. I hate being called Saranya by anyone close to me.

So he managed to screw up that pretty well.

Disaster 3: Recent Birthday:
5 years of knowing each other and I had mastered the art of acting surprised at the very same chocolate flavoured midnight surprise cake he got on every anniversary and birthday 😄 Last birthday the surprise cake didn't come so I was expecting him to bring it along when he's back from office. Husband comes back from office empty handed, seems he forgot his wallet at home when he left in the morning 😓😓
I checked online, called up a restaurant and booked a table and also asked for a surprise cake to be arranged..errrr..for myself 😒

Years have gone by, even after screwing up every surprise, this guy still manages to be my Superman. I guess the reason behind this is that, it's only those important days that he ends up in a flop show but normal days are mostly a celebration for us 😁😁

Wednesday, 8 March 2017

No matter what he has in his hand, he cannot take his eyes off what's on my plate 😁😁

This is what you call a balanced meal...Or rather "balancing a meal" 😁

Tuesday, 7 March 2017

Sunday Brunch:

In our thought:
Get a lake side seat, enjoy the view, walk around and pick up our favourite things to eat, RELAX!

Reality:
Sit on the floor near the lake under scorching sun
Say "Hello fish" 108 times with the same level of excitement to every orange fish that goes by
Catch Agu right before he takes a leap into the water just to get close to the fish
Eat whatever left over from Agu's plate

Me: Which is your favorite colour?
Agu: Ice cream

Me: I am asking about COLOUR, red, blue, green, yellow or orange?
Agu: Chocolate ice cream!

Whatever be the question, his answer is "ice cream" these days. A bit of maternal genes working here finally 😁😁

Wednesday, 1 March 2017

Tried making checkerboard cookies and they turned out like marble cookies 😮
One of those moments when you feel like you are horrible at what you are doing, apart from parenting 🙊🙊

Monday, 27 February 2017

So this has become his default sleeping pose these days, just to make sure that I don't sneak out and get some me-time even while he's asleep 😒😒
